Food and Drink: Pre-colonial Filipino cuisine has been influenced by neighboring countries, as well as by Chinese merchants who frequented the country to engage in trade. During the Spanish colonial period, the Spaniards not only brought with them Spanish and Mexican cooking techniques, but also crops from the Americas. When the US colonized the country right after Spain, the Americans brought with them fast food and canned goods like corned beef and Spam.
Cebu’s towns have their own local delicacies, which are either precolonial or heavily influenced by Spanish or Chinese cuisine. Cebu lechon or roast pig is one of the two types of lechon in the Philippines (the other being lechon Luzon), with most food experts agreeing that it is the tastier of the two. Seafood is also a staple in Cebu. House of Lechon is one of the most popular lechon restaurants in Cebu City, while Paolito’s Seafood House is the go-to destination for fresh seafood.
For wine and cocktails, the Distillery Bar, the Social Café Bar, and La Vie Parisienne are must-visits.
Places to Visit: To learn about Cebu’s precolonial and Spanish colonial past, visitors shouldn’t miss the Magellan’s Cross Pavilion, the Cebu National and Provincial Museums, and Fort San Pedro, which served as the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. Other popular tourist attractions include Anjo World Theme Park, SM Seaside City, and Cebu Ocean Park.
Where to Stay: Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino has been one of the most popular hotels in the city, along with the relatively newer Quest Hotel. Both are less than 10 minutes’ drive from the two major business districts, the Cebu IT Park and the Cebu Business Park. For visitors who prefer to enjoy Cebu’s beaches, they can opt for any of the upscale hotels in nearby Mactan Island.
